9 Months

I know, I know....Tristen turned 9 months last Thursday not today. But, here are my excuses for not documenting it on the blog on Thursday:

1) I didn't have an updated 9 month picture....I'm still waiting to capture "the one" (you know, the picture that will be "THE 9 month picture" that we hang up) but at least I have a few cute ones from our "photo session" today.

2) I didn't have the best doctor's appointment on Thursday and didn't really want to talk about it. Tristen is underweight and needs to gain weight before a follow up appointment in 3 weeks. My first thought was that I was absolutely failing as a mother, it was all my fault that he hadn't gained like he should, etc. Then I thought about all the possible things that could be wrong as to why he hasn't gained. Finally I caught hold of my emotions and realized that I needed to take it to the Lord. I am now trying to calmly tackle the problem and get his weight up. Taking the doctor's advice, we're supplementing with everything from formula to butter and olive oil. And, I'm pretty sure he's put on some weight already because he's finally out of 6 month clothing...Yay! I thought he would never grow out of those clothes but he's finally into 9-12 month things :) We're just praying that it will be an easy fix and the supplements will do the trick.

BUT, all that to say....Tristen is 9 months old and such a joy. He loves to use furniture to walk and is becoming quite the little monkey. Aaron and I just love spending time with him....seriously, we can't imagine life without him now. :) So, Happy 9 months, Tristen! We love you!!

A Little Bit of Everything

This post is going to be a little bit of everything. These last two weeks have been BUSY....just random stuff here and there but busy all the same.

These two have been quite hilarious lately. Sadie has decided that she not only likes Tristen, she likes Tristen's food that drops on the floor. Oh goodness....Sadie, you really do give me a run for my money. She's even taken food from his hands which makes his little lip quiver and before I know it, a full blown cry comes out of his mouth. Are you sure I don't have two children? Most of the time it feels like I do!! :)
Tristen's absolute favorite toy of the week is......Aaron's textbooks. Maybe we'll just skip children's books?

It's getting colder! That means our hats, coats, and scarves are out! Wahoo!! So exciting!

We have a gazillion apples on our deck, freshly picked and just waiting for people to take them off our hands.....we will never be without apples, that's for sure! Any takers?? (Tristen even picked one)

Some of you may have followed my cousin and his wife's blog about their life in Arizona.....now they live in Iowa and we were able to meet up with them on Friday! It was so fun to catch up with Ethan and Michelle and their two kiddos :)
So, so fun! Michelle and I with our boys!
I also saw some high school friends on Saturday....and we started thinking about our 10 year reunion that will be happening next year. Really? 10 years? That went fast.
Sewing progress!!!
I have to admit something. I didn't sew (since my last post) until last night when I realized I really really need to get at least one costume done. So, after sewing during his naps yesterday, I'm almost done with Tristen's....a few more finishing touches on the jumpsuit and then the mane head covering and I'm done. But, this is my progress so far....needs to be taken in a bit but it's getting there!

Happy Tuesday!

This Week....

....has been:
Funny. Random. Cute. Exciting. Cozy. Laid Back.

All in all a really great week.

I'm just coming in from a very cozy campfire, wrapped in a sweatshirt and blanket.....ahhh, L.O.V.E
A funny thing happened on Sunday night. Some friends had a fun twist on a potluck....instead of just bringing anything, we had to bring our favorite childhood food. Mine? Peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Yummo! Aaron's? Ice Cream Sandwiches. It was so fun to eat childhood faves with friends!

A random thing happened on Tuesday night. We have "Small Town Tour" days where a few friends and I visit cafes in small towns. It is way fun and the place we visited on Tuesday also had a Classic Car Show going on. It was.....classic......and very random A cute thing happened the same night when these two were on the swings.....An exciting thing happened yesterday when we had an evening together to go hiking. No pressing homework, no prior commitments, no bugs....just the three of us hiking by the river. So great.....so exciting.
A cozy thing has been happening all week as I pull out sweaters and sweatshirts, open up the windows, make banana bread and other goodies, and burn candles with sweet aromas that fill my house with yumminess.

And, a laid back thing has happened this week as this boy's top teeth are finally pushing their way through and he has been a bit under the weather. All he wants to do is cuddle and chew on teether toys and I'm very much okay with that....this week has been all about being laid back and cozy. We're doing well and loving this fall weather. Aaron's classes are going well, Tristen's been good besides teething all week, and I'm plugging away at the sewing.....well, sort of. :) It will get done eventually :) Have a good weekend!

9/11

Today we remember. With memories of 10 years ago and the events that changed the last decade, we remember that awful event on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. I was a senior in high school, trying to get through one last year before heading off to the big city for college. I have a vague memory of driving to school that morning with my mom and hearing scratches over the radio, "New York. *static* Plane *static*" Not thinking much of it, I think I turned off the radio and continued to school.

It wasn't until I was in my first class that my superintendent came in. He had a concerned look on his face and my mind immediately went to two years prior when a friend died in a car accident. A slight panic filled my heart as I looked around at my classmates. Everyone was there and I quickly turned my attention to his words. "Two planes have crashed into the World Trade Centers in New York." I can't remember much after that except he ushered in a TV and showed us the images. It was horrifying. Nothing like this had ever happened in my lifetime.

Within a half hour, he cancelled school and my friends came to my house to watch everything unfold. It felt like some sort of nightmare as we watched over and over the buildings collapsing. All I could think about were the innocent people whose lives were lost. My friends and I were worried.....it would be our generation going off to fight a war. "A war on terrorism", as it was called. It was in those moments that I had a fear like I had never experienced before. The world was a dark and scary place and sin was prevalent.

Looking back, the event is even more horrifying than it was on that day. Whenever I see images, I think of not only the lives lost, but the lives forever changed. The spouses who are alone now, the children without fathers and mothers, the parents without sons and daughters, and the people who were directly affected by 9/11.

This morning I watched a bit of the memorial before church and I think the Psalm read is a perfect one to end this post with:

Psalm 46
"God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress."

Project of the Month

The sewing machine is out and a project is underway in my house today.
"What are you making?", you ask
Halloween costumes!
Way more fun to make than the jean skirt that I can't seem to finish :) This particular project is Tristen's costume....I'm going to make him a Lion.

Last night I started my costume and it is cut out....BUT, it's a secret so no pictures! Just in case it totally flops, I don't want to have to show pictures of the bad finished project. But, for a clue, Aaron and I are going as two characters from one of his favorite movies. Any guesses?

I'm excited to sew the day away! Is it too early to decorate for fall and make an apple pie too? I just LOVE that it's September!!!

It's A Small World After All....

*Cue It's a Small World music*
"It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
Its a small, small world"

Now you all have that song in your head as you read this post....I know, it will drive you crazy for the rest of the day! Bwahaha *evil laugh* But, seriously, it is SUCH a small world, isn't it?

For some reason tonight, I am a little bewildered at how small the world is. High school friends, camp friends, college friends, family friends, in-laws, Cherokee friends, Mankato friends all seem to "know-someone-that-knows-someone-that-knows-someone" that I know from another chapter in my life. So stinkin' crazy. Thank you Facebook for continually showing me how small the world is. Anyone else think the world is crazy small and the connections are endless?

Or, maybe it's just because I grew up in Iowa and everyone knows everyone in Iowa :) *Shout out to the great state of Iowa* :) Anywho, random thought of the day!

Labor Day

Ahhh....and I'm back. I had a fantastic Labor Day weekend! This morning I was just a LITTLE tired from all my travels (and from laughing all weekend!) but it was all so worth it. Tristen and I spent Friday and Saturday in South Dakota visiting my grandparents while Aaron worked and studied the weekend away. Here are a few pics mostly for my relatives who read this!Chillin' with my aunt Terri

My cousin Kerry and I had a great weekend together

Tristen likes "Aunt Kerry"

And so do I! I miss this girl!

Picture time with my grandparents!!

Then, Tristen and I came back to Mankato to spend Sunday and Monday with the Willey side. I didn't take many pictures because I've come to depend on this girl's mad photography skills.....
But, here are a few:

Aaron missed us while we were gone and wanted some good quality time with his son

My dear friend, Sarah, was in Mankato for the weekend and we loved hanging out with her!!

The guys played Bocce Ball

And, as always, there was a lot of baby giggling time!

This picture cracks me up!

The girls! Yea!

And, that was my weekend :) Hope you all had a great Labor Day as well!
