2011 was a pretty good year. It had it's bumps along the road but all in all, a pretty good year. I have LOVED being a stay-at-home mom this year and Aaron has loved his classes and the opportunity to continue to learn. We know that 2012 is going to be busy....between clinicals in Minneapolis that will take Aaron away every week to welcoming our second child in June....our entire family is going to be busy, but we count ourselves blessed. We have each other and God and that is enough. He will get us through the busyness and stress of the new year and because of that knowledge, we need never worry about the year to come.

So long, 2011. Hello 2012.

A Love Story

I told you that you would be hearing from me quite a bit this week! Just so much to tell about! I'm going to share the love story of Nate and Sarah because I just think it's so beautiful and wonderful how God works! Plus, everyone loves a good love story!! I'll try to keep it concise but it was 7 years in the making and I've been thinking about this post since they started dating :)

Background knowledge:
(At a wedding 6 years ago)
Sarah: I met Sarah when I was 16 because we worked at the same summer camp. We were acquaintances but didn't really get to know each other until our freshman year of college at Northwestern College. At one time, we made a list of all the things we had in common and it was CRAZY how much we were alike. We became roommates our senior year and there was never a dull moment in our room! Since then, we've kept in touch and have seen each other through joys and struggles throughout the last 5 years even though we lived miles apart.

(This picture just cracks me up!)
Nate: Nate is Aaron's older brother and the person who I was constantly trying to set up. The poor guy...I literally tried to set him up with all my single friends!

So, their story actually started 7 years ago when Sarah and I were roommates. I was about to visit Aaron (my fiance at the time) in Willmar and as I was packing my bags, I asked Sarah what she was doing for the weekend. Having no plans and always up for an adventure, I invited her along to Aaron's parents' house if it wasn't too weird for her to hang out with an engaged couple and his parents all weekend :) That weekend, Aaron's dad said to her, "You know, I have another son who's single. He lives in China right now." and proceeded to tell her about Nate. We all laughed it off, thought it would never happen and that was that.

That summer, Aaron and I got married. The only girlfriend of mine that Nate remembers is "a beautiful redhead in a green and blue dress". It was Sarah :)

The next summer ('07), our youth group stopped in Minneapolis on our way back from the Boundary Waters. Nate was a sponsor and I wanted to see Sarah so she stopped by the church we were staying at. We stayed up til all hours of the night playing Apples to Apples together and I think it was the first time they actually met each other.

Okay, background knowledge aside....
here's when God really started working things out for them:
Christmas '08~
Nate and Sarah were both single and over Christmas I had a thought, "Would they ever work?" Mentioning the thought to both of them, they considered it, thought about the distance between them (Nate in Ames studying at Iowa State University and Sarah in Minneapolis teaching) and didn't do anything about it.

However, two months later, Sarah decided to join the Navigators Edge Corp program. She told me how excited she was to get her placement and was ready to go anywhere: California, New Mexico, East Coast, Florida! The possibilities were endless. I jokingly told her she should move to Iowa so she could be closer to me. A few weeks later, she called me back with her placement. She was placed at none other than.....

Iowa State University

The exact university that Nate was going back to school at. I remember thinking "Lord, do you have plans for Nate and Sarah together!!?!" I had my hopes up high as they entered into the year, met each other, and just became acquaintances. No sparks flew even though they saw each other at different events. I let the idea go and continued to search for a man for Sarah and a woman for Nate.

Last year around this time, I remember praying specifically for Nate and Sarah that God would bring "the one" into both their lives. In my prayer journal, I actually wrote, "Maybe you'll just put them together, God. Kill two birds with one stone" since I was praying for both of them.

What is so amazing in their story is that the timing was everything.  God's timing is perfect and their story is a testament to that. This summer, they ran into each other at a Fish Fry at Sarah's church. Talking the evening away, the thought of each other finally crossed their minds. The next day, I had a phone call from Sarah wondering if that would EVER work. The day after, we had a phone call from Nate about something else but when Aaron asked about Sarah, he was quick to talk about seeing her.

After a month of conversing via facebook and asking us questions about the other, Nate hinted that we should visit Ames and it would be fun to see Sarah. I, the matchmaker, RAN with that idea and we were in Ames that weekend and seeing Sarah every second that we could amidst her busy schedule. After seeing them together, I knew they were perfect for each other. How no one ever saw it before is beyond me but again, it was a timing thing I'm sure! They started dating a week later and the rest is history :)

And, one of my dearest friends in the whole world is going to be my sister-in-law. I seriously STILL can't believe it and will probably need to pinch myself once in a while to make sure it's real. God's timing and will is so perfect and wonderful. What a beautiful love story that God wrote :)

Showing how much change a year can bring! Last year to the date....Sarah didn't have a clue that we would be celebrating her engagement a year later!!

This year! Oh happy day!! I love these girls!!

Tristen's First Birthday

Tristen's birthday was SO fun! It seems like it just flew right past me and now Tristen is one! A few months back, I came across a SUPER cute idea on a blog: A vintage newspaper themed first birthday.  I LOVE throwing parties and this idea hardly cost a dime! The newspapers were free and I knew people who had awesome props that I could use!! I'll let the pics do the rest of the talking:

Ready for the party to begin!

Guestbook, party hats, cake pops, pics of his first year

We had an old time pic taken this summer on vacation! It was the perfect addition to this table!

The guests talking and completing a Tristen themed word search

Tristen all of a sudden decided he didn't like party hats

So, no party hat for the cake part!! He didn't even want to try his cake but just looked at it and cried!

So, Aaron tried to give him a little taste but he still hated it!!

Finally I stepped in and he ate a few bites....but didn't enjoy it at all :) That's a good thing though, right? At least he won't want sweets all the time!

Presents went MUCH better :)

We ended the night by taking old photo pics to tie into the theme!

Haha! What a wonderfully FUN night!!! :) I hope this boy never feels left out because his birthday is close to the holidays!! :) Happy Birthday again, dear Tristen!! :)

What a Week!!

Oh wow.....where do I even begin!?! My Christmas was wonderful, Tristen's birthday was wonderful (even though he hated his cake!), I'm gaining a new sister-in-law this summer, my niece is coming tomorrow if not before....a whole lot can happen in a week!! I'll split up the posts so you might be hearing from me a lot over the next few days :)

Even though Tristen's birthday was first, I'll save that one for another day....instead, here's all that happened on Christmas.

We had our family Christmas on Christmas Eve and it was definitely memorable! Aaron had to work early in the morning until late afternoon on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We tried to fit in as much as we could on Christmas Eve and realized we may have packed it just a little too full. Aaron and I were half asleep at 7:30pm and we were all out cold by 8:00 :) But, it was still fun to go to a Christmas Eve service, eat a Christmas dinner, watch Tristen try to open presents, and share in our second Christmas together as a family of 3 :)

I have to admit that Christmas Day was a little hard for the first few hours. I've been alone on Christmas before but it's still hard not to have your husband with you on a holiday. But, I watched a Christmas movie while Tristen slept and that got me into the Christmas spirit! Thankfully Aaron was able to join us for dinner that evening and for the biggest surprise that came later on! After he got off work, we headed over to Aaron's parents to celebrate Christmas with his family.

After the babies opened their presents and went to bed, we had a relaxing and delicious meal together before opening presents. A tradition on his side is to share something about the Christmas season or something that God has taught you over the course of the year before we open presents. I recall seeing all the men congregate to a room and whisper to each other but didn't think too much of it. Well, Aaron's dad wondered if we could do things different and instead of sharing, if the men could pray for their wives. I quickly said, "You mean, girlfriends too, right?" since I didn't want to make my friend Sarah (our brother-in-law, Nate's, girlfriend) feel weird. So, one by one, the men prayed for their wives in a special seat.

I thought it strange that my husband wanted to videotape everything and that the video camera was pointed toward the "special seat" the wives had to sit in but again, didn't think too much of it, and I also thought it strange that they had Nate pray for Sarah last since Nate is the oldest. However, as Nate was praying, I heard a rustling and glanced up to see him reach into his pocket and pull out a ring. As he finished his prayer for their future and Sarah looked up, he was down on one knee and asked her to be his wife in front of us all!! It was SO wonderful!!! :) And, the whole thing was on video....of course that's why my husband was videoing!!! Sarah was SO surprised and happy and it was just beautiful to watch :)

After hugs and congrats, we celebrated them as a couple for a while and were just in awe at what God had done in a year's time I'll write out their love story from my point of view (since Aaron and I did have an integral part in it!) another day but it has been a beautiful love story to watch unfold :)

Although presents were fun to open, we all said that we didn't need presents this year after that proposal :) We stayed overnight and were still a little in shock the next morning when we kept looking at her ring finger to make sure the night before had actually happened :) So beautiful, so wonderful.....:) That was our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day :) Memorable, eh? Okay, here are the pics....warning, there's a lot!

Tristen opening up his presents

Funny thing about kids this age....he didn't want to open up another present because he wanted to play with the one he just opened and then kept going back and forth between presents because there was so much to play with! He's checking out his new book here :)

Yummy dessert :) Even though he hates cake, he didn't mind a little pie :)

They will be a family next year!

After the proposal! Look at that rock on her finger!

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas! Thanks for reading about mine!! More to come!!
